• 1812 Assassination of Spencer Perceval Only British prime minister ever assassinated, shot in the House of Commons lobby On 11 May 1812 Prime Minister Spencer Perceval was shot dead in the lobby of the House of Commons by John Bellingham, a merchant with a grievance against the government. He remains the only British prime minister to have been assassinated. Bellingham was tried and hanged within a week of the killing.
