1812Assassination of Spencer PercevalOnly British prime minister ever assassinated, shot in the House of Commons lobbyOn 11 May 1812 Prime Minister Spencer Perceval was shot dead in the lobby of the House of Commons by John Bellingham, a merchant with a grievance against the government. He remains the only British prime minister to have been assassinated. Bellingham was tried and hanged within a week of the killing.
1812Treaty of Bucharest signedRussia and the Ottoman Empire end the Russo-Turkish WarSigned on 28 May 1812, the Treaty of Bucharest ended the Russo-Turkish War of 1806-1812, with the Ottoman Empire ceding Bessarabia to Russia. The settlement freed Russian forces weeks before Napoleon's invasion, allowing them to be redeployed against France. The treaty also granted autonomy to the Serbian principality.
