• 1812 Siege of Badajoz Wellington's forces storm the Spanish fortress city at heavy cost British and Portuguese forces under the Duke of Wellington stormed the French-held fortress of Badajoz on 6 April 1812 during the Peninsular War, suffering severe casualties in the assault. The capture opened the way for Wellington's advance into Spain. The storming was followed by widely reported looting and disorder among the victorious troops.
