1739 – 1812George Clinton (1739-1812)Died 20 April 1812, aged 72George Clinton served as the fourth Vice President of the United States under both Thomas Jefferson and James Madison, and earlier as the first Governor of New York for a cumulative twenty-one years. He remains the only person to serve as vice president under two different presidents. He died in office in Washington, D.C.
1812Siege of BadajozWellington's forces storm the Spanish fortress city at heavy costBritish and Portuguese forces under the Duke of Wellington stormed the French-held fortress of Badajoz on 6 April 1812 during the Peninsular War, suffering severe casualties in the assault. The capture opened the way for Wellington's advance into Spain. The storming was followed by widely reported looting and disorder among the victorious troops.
