1807United States bans the importation of slavesJefferson signs law ending the Atlantic slave trade to AmericaPresident Thomas Jefferson signed the Act Prohibiting Importation of Slaves on 2 March 1807, banning the importation of enslaved people into the United States effective 1 January 1808. The domestic slave trade within the US continued and the law was poorly enforced. It mirrored Britain's abolition of the trade the same year.
