• 1807 Chesapeake-Leopard Affair British warship attacks American frigate The British warship HMS Leopard fired on and boarded the American frigate USS Chesapeake off Virginia on 22 June 1807, removing four sailors it claimed as deserters. The incident outraged American public opinion and pushed the United States toward the Embargo Act. It was a major step on the road to the War of 1812.
