He served briefly as Foreign Secretary in 1806 as part of the Ministry of All the Talents coalition government. He died in office at Chiswick, London.
1806Lewis and Clark Expedition concludesExplorers return to St. Louis after charting the American WestThe Corps of Discovery, led by Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, returned to St. Louis on 23 September 1806 after more than two years mapping a route to the Pacific. The expedition gathered extensive geographic, scientific, and diplomatic information about the lands acquired in the Louisiana Purchase. It opened the way for American expansion into the western territories.
