1806Joseph Bonaparte becomes King of NaplesNapoleon's brother takes the Neapolitan throneAfter French troops conquered the mainland Kingdom of Naples, Napoleon installed his elder brother Joseph Bonaparte as king on 30 March 1806. The Bourbon royal family fled to Sicily, where British naval power kept them safe from French invasion. Joseph ruled Naples until 1808, when Napoleon moved him to the Spanish throne.
