1759 – 1806William Pitt the Younger (1759-1806)Died 23 January 1806, aged 46Pitt served as Britain's youngest prime minister, first from 1783 to 1801 and again from 1804 until his death. He led Britain through the early Napoleonic Wars and helped organize the coalitions against France. He died in London, reportedly worn down by the stress of office and news of Austria's defeat at Austerlitz.
1806Battle of BlaauwbergBritain seizes the Cape Colony from the DutchOn 8 January 1806, a British invasion force defeated Dutch defenders near Cape Town, securing British control of the Cape Colony. The victory gave Britain a strategic base guarding the sea route to India. The Cape remained under British rule for the rest of the century.
