• 1802 Heinrich Olbers discovers the asteroid Pallas Second minor planet found, reigniting debate over a "missing planet" German astronomer Heinrich Wilhelm Olbers discovered the asteroid 2 Pallas on 28 March 1802, a year after Giuseppe Piazzi found Ceres. The find supported theories that a shattered planet once orbited between Mars and Jupiter. Olbers went on to propose what became known as the asteroid belt.
