1797Fall of the Republic of VeniceNapoleon ends over a thousand years of Venetian independenceUnder pressure from French forces, the last Doge of Venice, Ludovico Manin, abdicated and the Great Council dissolved itself, ending the Venetian Republic after more than a thousand years. Napoleon subsequently ceded Venice to Austria under the Treaty of Campo Formio. The event marked the end of one of Europe's oldest states.
