• 1797 Fall of the Republic of Venice Napoleon ends over a thousand years of Venetian independence Under pressure from French forces, the last Doge of Venice, Ludovico Manin, abdicated and the Great Council dissolved itself, ending the Venetian Republic after more than a thousand years. Napoleon subsequently ceded Venice to Austria under the Treaty of Campo Formio. The event marked the end of one of Europe's oldest states.
