1724 – 1792John Smeaton (1724-1792)Died 28 October 1792, aged 68John Smeaton was an English civil engineer best known for designing the third Eddystone Lighthouse off the Cornish coast. He is widely regarded as the father of civil engineering as a professional discipline and helped found the Society of Civil Engineers. He died at Austhorpe, Yorkshire, on 28 October 1792.
1792White House Cornerstone LaidConstruction begins on the US president's residenceOn 13 October 1792 the cornerstone of the President's House was laid in the new federal city of Washington. Designed by James Hoban, the building would become the official residence and workplace of the President of the United States. It was not completed until 1800, when John Adams became its first resident.
