1792Buttonwood Agreement Founds the New York Stock ExchangeBrokers formalize securities trading in New YorkOn 17 May 1792, twenty-four New York brokers signed the Buttonwood Agreement under a buttonwood tree on Wall Street, setting common rules and commissions for trading securities. The agreement is traditionally regarded as the founding document of the New York Stock Exchange. It laid groundwork for New York's rise as a financial center.
1792Polish-Russian War of 1792Russia intervenes to overturn Poland's reform constitutionBeginning on 18 May 1792, Russian forces invaded the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth at the invitation of the Targowica Confederation, a group of Polish magnates opposed to the reforms of the May 1791 constitution. Despite resistance led by Prince Jozef Poniatowski and Tadeusz Kosciuszko, Poland capitulated in late July 1792. The war paved the way for the Second Partition of Poland the following year.
