1791Treaty of Sistova signedAustria and the Ottoman Empire end their warSigned on 4 August 1791, the Treaty of Sistova ended the Austro-Turkish War of 1788-1791 with minor territorial adjustments and a return to the prewar status quo. Austria withdrew from the conflict to focus on the growing crisis posed by revolutionary France. The treaty confirmed Ottoman control over most of the contested Balkan territory.
1791Haitian Revolution beginsEnslaved people rise up across Saint-DomingueOn the night of 22-23 August 1791, enslaved Africans in the French colony of Saint-Domingue launched a mass uprising, burning plantations and killing planters across the Northern Province. The revolt, preceded by the Bois Caiman ceremony, grew into the Haitian Revolution. It would eventually produce the first successful slave-led republic in the Americas.
1791Declaration of Pillnitz issuedAustria and Prussia threaten to intervene in FranceHoly Roman Emperor Leopold II and King Frederick William II of Prussia issued the Declaration of Pillnitz on 27 August 1791, asserting a shared interest in restoring Louis XVI's authority. Though hedged with conditions, revolutionaries in France read it as a direct threat of foreign invasion. It helped push France toward the war that broke out the following year.
