• 1778 Treaty of Alliance Signed Between France and the United States France formally allies with the American rebels France and the United States signed a treaty of alliance in Paris, committing French military and naval support to the American war against Britain. The agreement followed the American victory at Saratoga and transformed the American Revolutionary War into a global conflict. It marked France's first formal recognition of American independence.
• 1778 – 1827 Ugo Foscolo (1778-1827) Died 10 September 1827, aged 49 Italian poet and novelist best known for his patriotic poem "Dei Sepolcri" and the epistolary novel "Le ultime lettere di Jacopo Ortis". He spent his final years in exile in England after opposing Austrian rule in northern Italy.
