1707 – 1778Carl LinnaeusFather of Modern TaxonomyCarl Linnaeus (1707-1778) was a Swedish botanist, physician, and zoologist who created the binomial system of naming organisms still used across the biological sciences today. Trained in medicine at Lund and Uppsala, he spent his early career collecting and classifying plants and animals across Scandinavia and the Netherlands before returning to a long professorship at Uppsala University. His landmark works, including Systema Naturae and Species Plantarum, imposed a rigorous, hierarchical order on the natural world that transformed botany and zoology into systematic sciences. Ennobled as Carl von Linné in 1761, he trained dozens of students, the so-called "Linnaean Apostles," who carried his methods to every continent.

1778 – 1842Bernardo O'Higgins (1778-1842)Died 24 October 1842, aged 64Bernardo O'Higgins led the fight for Chilean independence alongside José de San Martín. He served as Supreme Director of Chile from 1817 to 1823. He died in exile in Lima and is honoured as one of the founding fathers of Chile.

1778 – 1850Jose de San Martin (1778-1850)Died 17 August 1850, aged 72San Martin led the armies that won independence for Argentina, Chile, and Peru from Spanish rule. After helping liberate Peru he voluntarily relinquished power rather than contest leadership with Simon Bolivar, and spent his final decades in exile in France. He is honored across South America as one of the continent' foremost liberators.
1778 – 1846Louis Bonaparte (1778-1846)Died 25 July 1846, aged 67Louis was a younger brother of Napoleon and King of Holland from 1806 to 1810. He abdicated after clashing with Napoleon over Dutch interests. His son became Emperor Napoleon III.
