Quentin Tarantino Timeline

Quentin Tarantino 21

Quentin Tarantino born in Knoxville, Tennessee Named after a Burt Reynolds character Quentin Jerome Tarantino is born to sixteen-year-old Connie McHugh, a nurse, and named after Burt Reynolds' character in the television western Gunsmoke. The family moves to the South Bay area of Los Angeles when he is four. He drops out of school at fifteen.
– 1989 Video Archives, Manhattan Beach Film school with a cash register Tarantino takes a job at a video rental shop in Manhattan Beach and spends the next several years watching everything in it and arguing about it with customers. He meets Roger Avary there. The shop's inventory — Godard next to Shaw Brothers next to Italian crime films — becomes, more or less exactly, his sensibility. He buys the entire stock decades later when the shop closes.
My Best Friend's Birthday The film that burned Tarantino writes, directs and stars in a black-and-white feature shot on weekends over four years with money from his video shop wages. Most of the negative is destroyed in a lab fire and only around thirty-six minutes survive. Chunks of the script are later recycled into True Romance.
Reservoir Dogs Sundance, and an ear A heist film with no heist in it, premiering at Sundance in January and reaching American cinemas in October. Made for a little over a million dollars with Harvey Keitel both starring and helping produce, it takes only around three million at the box office and becomes, on video, one of the most influential independent films ever released. Everything Tarantino will be accused of and praised for is already fully present.
True Romance Written, not directed Tarantino sells the script and Tony Scott directs it, restructuring the chronology into a straight line. The Christopher Walken and Dennis Hopper scene remains the most quoted thing in it. The sale money is what allows Tarantino to hold out for control on Reservoir Dogs.
Pulp Fiction Palme d'Or, and a new grammar Three interlocking Los Angeles crime stories told out of order, with a dead man alive again in the final scene. It wins the Palme d'Or at Cannes in May, is released in October, takes over two hundred million dollars on an eight-million-dollar budget, and resurrects John Travolta's career. For most of the following decade every independent crime film in America is trying to be it.
Academy Award for Pulp Fiction Best Original Screenplay Tarantino and Roger Avary win Best Original Screenplay at the 67th Academy Awards. Pulp Fiction is nominated for seven and wins one, while Forrest Gump takes Best Picture. Having already won the Palme d'Or at Cannes the previous May, Tarantino at thirty-one is the most talked-about director in America.
From Dusk Till Dawn Written, and acting Robert Rodriguez directs Tarantino's script, in which a hostage road movie turns without warning into a vampire siege halfway through. Tarantino plays Richie Gecko opposite George Clooney. It is the clearest early statement of his willingness to break a film in half on purpose.
Jackie Brown The quiet one His only adaptation — of Elmore Leonard's Rum Punch — and his most restrained film, built around Pam Grier and Robert Forster and a great deal of patience. It disappoints commercially against the expectations Pulp Fiction created and is now widely regarded as one of his best. Forster receives an Oscar nomination.
Kill Bill: Volume 1 Six years away, then this After a six-year gap Tarantino returns with a revenge film assembled out of samurai cinema, spaghetti westerns, anime and Hong Kong martial arts. Written as one film, it is split in two at Miramax's insistence when the runtime passes four hours. Uma Thurman's Bride is the character Tarantino has said he is proudest of writing.
Kill Bill: Volume 2 The talking half The second half inverts the first: less swordplay, more dialogue, and the confrontation with David Carradine's Bill that the whole thing has been building toward. Tarantino has periodically talked about assembling the two into a single Whole Bloody Affair cut.
Death Proof Half of Grindhouse Released as one half of a double bill with Rodriguez's Planet Terror, complete with fake trailers and simulated print damage. A stuntman uses his car as a murder weapon until he picks the wrong group of women. It is the closest thing Tarantino has to a commercial failure and the film he is most openly critical of himself.
Inglourious Basterds History rewritten, and Waltz A war film in four languages that ends by burning Hitler alive in a Paris cinema — the first of Tarantino's revisionist revenge fantasies. Christoph Waltz, essentially unknown outside German television, wins the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for Hans Landa. The opening farmhouse scene is arguably the best twenty minutes Tarantino has directed.
Django Unchained Slavery as spaghetti western A freed slave and a German bounty hunter ride into Mississippi. It becomes Tarantino's highest-grossing film to that point, takes over four hundred million dollars worldwide, and draws sustained criticism from Spike Lee among others over its use of the slave era as genre material. It is also his last collaboration with editor Sally Menke, who died in 2010, and the first film he has to cut without her.
A second Academy Award Best Original Screenplay, again Tarantino wins Best Original Screenplay for Django Unchained at the 85th Academy Awards, eighteen years after the first. Christoph Waltz wins his second Supporting Actor award for the same film.
The Hateful Eight Ultra Panavision 70 A chamber western in which eight people are snowed into a stagecoach stop and almost none of them survive. Tarantino shoots it in 70mm Ultra Panavision, a format unused since 1966, and mounts a roadshow release with an overture and an intermission. Ennio Morricone writes the score and finally wins a competitive Oscar for it at eighty-seven.
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood The ninth film A fading television actor and his stunt double drift through Los Angeles in 1969 while, next door, the Manson murders approach. Tarantino rebuilds Hollywood Boulevard for it and then, characteristically, refuses to let history happen. Brad Pitt wins Best Supporting Actor. It is Tarantino's ninth feature and, by his own long-standing rule, the second-to-last.
The novelisation A paperback, on purpose Tarantino publishes Once Upon a Time in Hollywood as a mass-market paperback novel — not a tie-in but a genuine rewrite, reordering events, expanding Cliff Booth's past and cutting the film's climax almost entirely. It is a deliberate revival of the disposable movie novelisations he grew up reading.
Cinema Speculation The criticism book A book of essays on the American films of the 1970s — Dirty Harry, Taxi Driver, Rolling Thunder — mixing criticism with memoir about being taken to adult films as a child by his mother and her boyfriends. It is the clearest available map of where his taste comes from.
The Movie Critic is scrapped The tenth film, abandoned Tarantino cancels his announced tenth and final film weeks before production. He later explains that he had set himself the challenge of making the most boring profession in the world interesting, and that the script, while good, felt like ground he had already walked. Brad Pitt had been attached to star. What the tenth film will be is now an open question.
The Adventures of Cliff Booth Written by Tarantino, directed by Fincher Netflix buys Tarantino's script for a Cliff Booth film set several years after Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, and Brad Pitt brings David Fincher in to direct. Tarantino declines the chair himself, saying the material felt too familiar and that his last film must be uncharted territory for him. Shot from July 2025 to January 2026 on a budget reported around two hundred million dollars, with an IMAX release ahead of streaming. It does not count toward his ten.
