Pyramids and woolly mammoths 2
4000 BC – 1650 BCThe last woolly mammoths -- Wrangel IslandA relict population outliving the mainland herds by millenniaWoolly mammoths died out across mainland Eurasia and North America around 10,000 years ago, but an isolated population survived on Wrangel Island in the Arctic Ocean until roughly 1650 BC. They were still alive while the Great Pyramid was being built and while the Egyptian Old Kingdom rose and fell.
2580 BC – 2560 BCGreat Pyramid of Giza -- the oldest WonderThe Great Pyramid of Giza, built for Pharaoh Khufu c.2580-2560 BC, is the oldest and largest of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World and the only one still standing. It contains approximately 2.3 million stone blocks averaging 2.5 tonnes; the total mass is approximately 5.9 million tonnes. For 3,800 years it is the tallest structure on earth at 146.5 metres. The precision is extraordinary: the base is level to within 2.1 centimetres, the sides aligned to true north within 0.05 degrees. The Merer Papyrus (discovered 2013) -- a logbook of a middle-ranking official -- provides the first direct contemporary evidence of how it was built: organised work gangs, boats transporting limestone from Tura, a ramp system.
