1806 – 1872 Benito Juárez (1806-1872) Died 18 July 1872, aged 66 Benito Juárez was President of Mexico who led resistance to French intervention and the execution of Emperor Maximilian, restoring the Mexican republic. He remains a central figure in Mexican national identity for his defense of liberal reform and sovereignty.
