1642Galileo Galilei dies in ArcetriPasses away still under house arrestGalileo Galilei died on January 8, 1642, at his villa in Arcetri, still formally under house arrest imposed by the Inquisition. The Church initially blocked plans for a grand public monument, and he was buried in a minor chapel before being reinterred with honors in the Basilica of Santa Croce in Florence nearly a century later, in 1737. Coincidentally, Isaac Newton, who would build directly upon Galileo's work on motion, was born later that same year.
