Jean-Paul Sartre Timeline

Jean-Paul Sartre 29

1905 Birth in Paris A philosopher is born Jean-Paul Charles Aymard Sartre was born on 21 June 1905 in Paris to Jean-Baptiste Sartre, a naval officer, and Anne-Marie Schweitzer. His father's family had modest means, while his mother was a cousin of the theologian and physician Albert Schweitzer. He would grow up as an only child in a household increasingly shaped by loss.
1906 Death of His Father Early loss shapes a childhood Sartre's father died in 1906 when Jean-Paul was only fifteen months old, an event Sartre later credited with sparing him the burden of a domineering paternal figure. He was raised largely by his mother and his maternal grandfather, Charles Schweitzer, a strict but literate man who introduced him early to books and classical culture. Sartre later reflected extensively on this childhood in his memoir Words.
1924 – 1929 Studies at the École Normale Supérieure Forming a philosophical foundation In 1924 Sartre entered the École Normale Supérieure in Paris, one of France's most elite institutions for training philosophers and academics. There he immersed himself in phenomenology, ethics, and the history of philosophy alongside a cohort of future intellectual luminaries. These years laid the theoretical groundwork for the existentialist philosophy he would later develop.
1929 Meets Simone de Beauvoir Beginning of a lifelong intellectual partnership In 1929, while preparing for the agrégation examination in philosophy, Sartre met Simone de Beauvoir, who placed second to his first in the notoriously difficult national competition. The two began a lifelong personal and intellectual partnership grounded in an open relationship rather than marriage, and each profoundly shaped the other's philosophical work. Beauvoir would go on to become one of the most influential feminist philosophers of the century.
1929 – 1931 Military Service Conscription into the French army Following his agrégation, Sartre fulfilled his mandatory military service between 1929 and 1931, serving in the meteorological corps. The experience gave him direct exposure to the discipline and hierarchy of military institutions, themes that would resurface in his later reflections on freedom and constraint. He returned to civilian life ready to begin a teaching career.
1931 – 1936 Teaches Philosophy in Le Havre Early career as a lycée instructor From 1931 Sartre taught philosophy at a lycée in Le Havre, a provincial industrial port city that he found stifling but that also supplied material for his fiction, most notably the fictional town of Bouville in Nausea. Teaching provided him a stable income while he developed his early philosophical writing and began drafting what would become his first novel. He remained in the post, with interruptions for study abroad, until 1936.
1933 – 1934 Studies Phenomenology in Berlin Encountering Husserl and Heidegger In 1933 and 1934, Sartre studied in Berlin at the French Institute, immersing himself in the phenomenology of Edmund Husserl and the existential ontology of Martin Heidegger. This exposure proved decisive, giving Sartre the philosophical tools and vocabulary he would adapt into his own distinctive existentialist framework. He returned to France determined to synthesize phenomenology with a theory of radical human freedom.
1938 Publishes Nausea A landmark of existentialist literature Sartre's first novel, La Nausée (Nausea), was published in 1938 and is now regarded as one of the foundational literary expressions of existentialist thought. Narrated through the journal of Antoine Roquentin, the novel depicts an overwhelming confrontation with the sheer contingency and absurdity of existence. It established Sartre as a major new literary voice in France.
1939 Publishes The Wall A short story collection on death and choice In 1939 Sartre published Le Mur (The Wall), a collection of short stories examining themes of mortality, contingency, and the psychological extremity of characters facing death or existential crisis. The title story, set during the Spanish Civil War, became particularly celebrated for its unflinching depiction of a man awaiting execution. The collection further cemented Sartre's reputation as a writer of philosophical fiction.
1940 Mobilized and Captured in WWII Prisoner of war in Nazi Germany Sartre was mobilized into the French army at the outbreak of the Second World War and served as a meteorologist before being captured by German forces in June 1940. He spent roughly nine months as a prisoner of war in a camp near Trier, Germany, an experience that deepened his engagement with themes of freedom under constraint. It was during this captivity that he first read Heidegger's Being and Time closely and began sketching his own major philosophical work.
1941 Released and Joins the Resistance Return to occupied Paris Sartre was released from the German POW camp in 1941 on medical grounds and returned to occupied Paris, where he helped found a short-lived resistance group called Socialisme et Liberté. Though the group soon dissolved, Sartre continued writing and teaching while contributing to clandestine intellectual circles opposed to the occupation. He also resumed a teaching post and continued drafting his major philosophical treatise.
1943 Publishes Being and Nothingness The definitive statement of Sartrean existentialism In 1943 Sartre published L'Être et le Néant (Being and Nothingness), his monumental philosophical treatise on ontology and human freedom. Drawing on phenomenology while diverging sharply from Heidegger, the book argued that human beings are radically free and condemned to create their own essence through their choices, famously summarized as "existence precedes essence." The work became the central philosophical text of twentieth-century existentialism.
1943 The Flies Premieres A play of resistance under occupation Sartre's play Les Mouches (The Flies), a retelling of the Orestes myth, premiered in occupied Paris in 1943. Beneath its classical surface, the play carried a veiled message about guilt, complicity, and the necessity of free action under tyranny, resonating with audiences living under Nazi occupation. It marked Sartre's emergence as a significant playwright alongside his work as a philosopher and novelist.
1944 No Exit Premieres Hell is other people Sartre's best-known play, Huis Clos (No Exit), premiered in Paris in May 1944, presenting three deceased characters trapped together for eternity in a single room. The play's closing line, "L'enfer, c'est les autres" ("Hell is other people"), became one of the most quoted phrases in modern philosophy and literature. It remains among the most frequently performed works of twentieth-century French theater.
1945 – 1949 Publishes The Roads to Freedom Trilogy A fictional exploration of freedom and war Between 1945 and 1949, Sartre published the three completed volumes of his novel sequence Les Chemins de la Liberté (The Roads to Freedom), tracing characters through the years before and during the Second World War as they confront questions of commitment, freedom, and political engagement. A planned fourth volume was left unfinished. The trilogy dramatized in fiction the philosophical concerns of Being and Nothingness.
1945 Founds Les Temps Modernes A platform for engaged intellectual life In October 1945 Sartre co-founded the journal Les Temps Modernes with Simone de Beauvoir and Maurice Merleau-Ponty, creating an influential platform for existentialist philosophy, literary criticism, and left-wing political commentary. The journal became a central forum through which Sartre articulated his concept of littérature engagée, the idea that writers bear a responsibility to address the political conditions of their time. It continued publishing for decades and shaped postwar French intellectual life.
1945 "Existentialism Is a Humanism" Lecture Popularizing existentialism to the public On 29 October 1945, Sartre delivered his famous public lecture "L'existentialisme est un humanisme" in Paris, defending existentialism against charges of nihilism and despair. The lecture, later published as a short book, became the most widely read introduction to his philosophy and brought existentialism to a broad popular audience beyond academic circles. It cemented Sartre's status as a public intellectual celebrity in postwar France.
1946 Publishes Anti-Semite and Jew A study of prejudice and identity In 1946 Sartre published Réflexions sur la question juive (Anti-Semite and Jew), a philosophical analysis of antisemitism written in the aftermath of the Holocaust and French collaborationist history. The essay examined how prejudice constructs both the persecutor and the identity imposed on the persecuted, applying existentialist concepts to social and political analysis. It remains a significant early attempt to theorize the psychology of racism through an existentialist lens.
1952 Public Rupture with Albert Camus A famous intellectual feud In 1952, following a critical review of Camus's The Rebel published in Les Temps Modernes, Sartre and Albert Camus engaged in a bitter public exchange of letters that permanently ended their friendship. The dispute crystallized deep political differences, with Sartre moving toward closer alignment with Marxism and Soviet-aligned politics while Camus rejected revolutionary violence. The rupture became one of the defining intellectual controversies of postwar French letters.
1954 Visits the Soviet Union Engagement with Cold War politics Sartre traveled to the Soviet Union in 1954 as part of his increasing, though frequently critical, engagement with international communism during the Cold War. His shifting and often controversial statements about Soviet society drew criticism from both anti-communist liberals and orthodox Communist Party members. The trip exemplified the complicated, non-aligned position Sartre occupied within postwar leftist politics.
1960 Publishes Critique of Dialectical Reason Attempting a synthesis with Marxism In 1960 Sartre published the Critique de la raison dialectique (Critique of Dialectical Reason), a dense philosophical work attempting to reconcile existentialist ideas of individual freedom with Marxist theories of historical and social structure. The book argued that existentialism should function as an auxiliary discipline within a broader Marxist understanding of history. It marked the most systematic phase of Sartre's turn toward political philosophy.
1961 Apartment Bombed Over Algeria Stance Targeted for anti-colonial activism Sartre's outspoken support for Algerian independence and his signing of the 1960 "Manifesto of the 121" defending the right to refuse military service in Algeria made him a target of the pro-colonial paramilitary group OAS, which bombed his Paris apartment in 1961. Sartre had also written the preface to Frantz Fanon's The Wretched of the Earth, further cementing his reputation as a fierce critic of French colonialism. He continued his activism undeterred despite the attack and further threats.
1964 Publishes Words A memoir of childhood In 1964 Sartre published Les Mots (Words), an autobiographical account of his childhood that reflected critically on his early infatuation with literature and language as a substitute for authentic action. The memoir was widely praised for its literary craftsmanship and self-critical honesty, and it was cited by the Nobel committee as a key work in his award that same year. It offered readers Sartre's own retrospective analysis of the making of an intellectual.
1964 Declines the Nobel Prize in Literature Refusing institutional honors In October 1964, Sartre was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature but declined it, stating that a writer should not allow himself to be transformed into an institution and citing his long-standing refusal of official honors. He remains the only person to have voluntarily declined the prize. The decision was consistent with his broader philosophical rejection of fixed, externally conferred identity.
1968 Supports the May 1968 Uprising Solidarity with student revolt During the student and worker uprisings that swept France in May 1968, Sartre publicly sided with the protesters, visiting occupied universities and even addressing students at the Sorbonne. His support lent intellectual legitimacy to the movement and reflected his long-standing belief in direct political engagement over academic detachment. The events reinforced his growing turn toward radical, extra-parliamentary politics in his final years.
1970 Arrested Distributing Banned Newspaper Direct action for Maoist causes In June 1970 Sartre was briefly arrested for distributing copies of La Cause du Peuple, a banned Maoist newspaper he had agreed to edit in order to shield its publishers from prosecution under his public stature. President Georges Pompidou reportedly ordered his prompt release, reasoning that "one does not arrest Voltaire." The episode exemplified Sartre's willingness to place his own body and reputation on the line for radical causes in his later years.
1973 Health Declines and Loses Sight Blindness in later life By 1973 Sartre had gone almost completely blind, a severe blow for a writer whose entire intellectual life had depended on reading and writing. He continued to produce work through dictation, including collaborative interviews and late philosophical reflections, but his physical decline markedly reduced his public activity. His final years were marked by the loyal support of companions, including Beauvoir and his adopted daughter Arlette Elkaïm-Sartre.
1980 Jean-Paul Sartre dies in Paris The end of an era in French thought Jean-Paul Sartre died in Paris on 15 April 1980 from pulmonary edema, following years of declining health. His death was met with an immense public outpouring of grief and reflection on his singular role in shaping twentieth-century philosophy, literature, and political engagement. Simone de Beauvoir, his lifelong companion, published her own account of his final days shortly afterward.
1980 Funeral Procession in Paris Tens of thousands mourn a public intellectual On 19 April 1980, an estimated 50,000 people joined Sartre's funeral procession through the streets of Paris to the Montparnasse Cemetery, an extraordinary public tribute rarely afforded to a philosopher. The crowd reflected the unique place Sartre had occupied in French public life as a thinker whose ideas and political interventions reached far beyond academic philosophy. He was buried at Montparnasse, where Simone de Beauvoir would later be interred beside him.
