Frank Sinatra Timeline

Frank Sinatra 27

1915 Frank Sinatra born in Hoboken, New Jersey Frank Sinatra is born on 12 December 1915 in Hoboken, New Jersey, the only child of Antonino Martino Sinatra, a Sicilian immigrant and amateur boxer who later becomes a Hoboken fireman, and Natalie Garaventa, a Ligurian immigrant known as Dolly, who is a local Democratic ward boss and occasional abortionist of considerable local power. Frank is delivered by forceps, leaving permanent scars on his cheek, neck and ear. Dolly is the dominant influence in his life: ambitious, driven, politically connected and absolutely certain her son will be a star.
1935 – 1939 The Hoboken Four -- first radio exposure Sinatra performs with a vocal group called the Hoboken Four on Major Bowes Amateur Hour in September 1935, winning the contest and beginning a touring engagement with Bowes's traveling show. He leaves the group, begins performing solo in New Jersey clubs and catches the attention of bandleader Harry James, who hires him in 1939. Sinatra is 23, unknown outside New Jersey, and already possessed of a musical intelligence that James immediately recognises. His recordings with the Harry James Orchestra are his first commercially released records -- modest sellers but evidence of extraordinary promise.
1940 – 1942 Tommy Dorsey Orchestra -- learning to sing Sinatra joins Tommy Dorsey's band in January 1940 -- the most commercially successful band in America -- and spends two years absorbing everything Dorsey knows about musicianship, phrasing and showmanship. Most significantly, he studies Dorsey's trombone technique: Dorsey can play an extraordinarily long phrase without appearing to breathe, achieved through circular breathing through a tiny aperture in the corner of his mouth. Sinatra translates this technique to voice -- developing the long, legato phrases that will define his mature style. He records his first major hits with Dorsey: 'I'll Never Smile Again' (1940) reaches Number 1.
1942 – 1943 The Paramount -- bobby-soxers and mass hysteria Sinatra performs at the Paramount Theatre in New York on 30 December 1942, billed as an 'extra added attraction' to Benny Goodman's band. The audience -- overwhelmingly teenage girls, known as bobby-soxers -- erupts in screaming that is unprecedented in American popular entertainment. He returns to the Paramount the following October for a four-week engagement; thousands queue overnight for tickets; girls faint in the aisles; police are called. The phenomenon is called 'Sinatramania' and it is the first modern pop idol mania -- the template for Beatlemania twenty years later.
1943 – 1947 Columbia Records -- the Voice at his peak Sinatra signs with Columbia Records in 1943 and records with arranger Axel Stordahl, producing a series of hit singles that confirm his status as America's most popular entertainer. 'All or Nothing at All,' 'Saturday Night,' 'Five Minutes More' and 'Full Moon and Empty Arms' are all major hits. He appears in Hollywood films -- 'Anchors Aweigh' (1945), 'It Happened in Brooklyn' (1947) -- and on radio. He is, for four years, the most famous person in America: performing at Madison Square Garden for 35,000 fans, recording Number 1 after Number 1, a phenomenon of a scale the music industry has never seen.
1947 – 1948 Political engagement -- Sinatra and civil rights Sinatra is one of the most publicly active white entertainers in supporting civil rights in the 1940s. He performs in integrated venues when it is commercially dangerous to do so, makes a short film ('The House I Live In,' 1945) condemning racial and religious prejudice, and refuses to perform at clubs that exclude Black patrons. He campaigns publicly against antisemitism and racism, using his fame as a platform at considerable commercial risk. The NAACP gives him an award. His political liberalism -- a genuine conviction rather than a calculated position -- is a significant part of his public identity in this period.
1949 – 1952 Career collapse -- the wilderness years By 1949-52 Sinatra's career is in freefall. His voice is damaged by a haemorrhage on his vocal cords in 1950; his marriage to Nancy Barbato disintegrates as his affair with Ava Gardner becomes public; Columbia drops him; his television show is cancelled; he is dropped by his talent agency; his film contract with MGM ends. In 1952 he cannot fill a theatre in New York. Critics write his obituary. He is 36 years old, professionally finished and personally in chaos. He pursues a role in the film 'From Here to Eternity' with a desperation that everyone around him finds embarrassing. It saves his life.
1953 Signs with Capitol Records -- the mature artist Sinatra signs with Capitol Records in 1953 and is paired with arranger Nelson Riddle -- the most consequential partnership in American popular music. Riddle's sophisticated, swinging arrangements give Sinatra's matured voice the perfect setting: brass-heavy charts for the up-tempo numbers, lush strings for the ballads, always with space for Sinatra to breathe and phrase. Where the Columbia recordings featured a young man's yearning, the Capitol recordings have the authority and complexity of hard experience. The Sinatra-Riddle collaboration produces the greatest run of albums in popular music history.
1953 From Here to Eternity -- Oscar and the comeback Sinatra campaigns relentlessly for the role of Pvt. Angelo Maggio in 'From Here to Eternity' (1953) -- screen-testing for free, badgering the studio and reportedly using mob connections to secure the casting. He wins the role, plays it brilliantly, and wins the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor at the 1954 ceremony. The Oscar is the hinge of his career: it restores his credibility, secures his Capitol Records deal and signals to Hollywood that the Voice is back. The comeback is the most dramatic in entertainment history -- from professional oblivion to Oscar winner in two years.
1955 In the Wee Small Hours -- the concept album invented 'In the Wee Small Hours' (1955) is Sinatra's first true concept album -- a sustained meditation on loss, loneliness and sleepless nights, constructed around Nelson Riddle's arrangements of 16 songs about romantic dejection. The album is inspired by his devastation following his divorce from Ava Gardner. It is the first popular album designed to be listened to in sequence as a unified emotional experience rather than as a collection of individual songs. Every subsequent concept album -- the Beatles' Sgt. Pepper, Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon -- owes a debt to 'In the Wee Small Hours.'
1956 Songs for Swingin Lovers -- the great swing album 'Songs for Swingin' Lovers' (1956), arranged by Nelson Riddle, is the definitive swing album in American popular music -- Sinatra at full confidence on an up-tempo programme of standards including 'You Make Me Feel So Young,' 'I've Got You Under My Skin' and 'Pennies from Heaven.' Paul McCartney has said he considers it the greatest album ever made. It reaches Number 2 on the Billboard chart. The recording of 'I've Got You Under My Skin' -- with Riddle's ascending trombone solo and Sinatra riding above it with perfect timing -- is one of the great moments in recorded popular music.
1957 – 1958 A Swingin Affair and Only the Lonely 'A Swingin' Affair' (1957) and 'Only the Lonely' (1958) complete the Capitol quartet. 'Only the Lonely' -- another concept album of loss and longing, featuring the devastating 'One for My Baby' -- is many critics' choice as Sinatra's single greatest album. It is recorded in sessions lasting late into the night at Capitol Tower in Hollywood, Sinatra conducting from the studio floor in the dark, smoking and occasionally weeping. The album demonstrates that popular music can contain adult emotional complexity without condescension.
1957 – 1959 Come Fly With Me and the jet-age albums 'Come Fly With Me' (1958), arranged by Billy May, inaugurates a series of travel-themed concept albums -- 'Come Dance With Me' (1959), 'Come Swing With Me' (1961) -- that are among the most purely pleasurable recordings in popular music. May's brassy, exuberant arrangements suit Sinatra's confident mid-career swagger. 'Come Fly With Me' reaches Number 1 and stays there for five weeks. The jet-age albums capture a specific moment in American cultural history: the postwar optimism of a prosperous nation newly able to travel the world for pleasure.
1959 – 1962 The Rat Pack -- Las Vegas and the Summit Sinatra leads the Rat Pack -- an informal entertainment group including Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Peter Lawford and Joey Bishop -- at the Sands Hotel in Las Vegas through the late 1950s and early 1960s. Their engagement at the Copa Room in January-February 1960 -- filmed as 'Ocean's 11' -- is the defining Las Vegas entertainment event of the era. The Rat Pack's combination of musical talent, inter-racial camaraderie (Davis is Black), irreverent humour and movie-star glamour creates a cultural archetype of masculine cool that resonates for decades. Las Vegas becomes, largely through Sinatra, the entertainment capital of America.
1960 JFK and the Kennedys -- political intimacy Sinatra organises and performs at John F. Kennedy's Inaugural Gala on 19 January 1961 -- a glittering Hollywood production that embodies the New Frontier optimism Kennedy represents. Sinatra and Kennedy are friends and share several of the same women. The relationship ends bitterly when Kennedy, on Robert Kennedy's advice, cancels a planned stay at Sinatra's Palm Springs estate due to Sinatra's mob connections. Sinatra, humiliated, never forgives Robert Kennedy and subsequently transfers his political allegiance to the Republican Party.
1961 Founds Reprise Records -- controlling his art Sinatra founds Reprise Records in 1960 -- driven by frustration with Capitol's ownership of his master recordings. Reprise gives him ownership of his recordings, creative control and a share of the profits from other artists. He signs Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Bing Crosby and eventually Jimi Hendrix, Neil Young and Joni Mitchell to the label. Warner Bros. acquires Reprise in 1963 (giving Sinatra a significant stake in Warner). The founding of Reprise is the most commercially astute decision of Sinatra's career -- the recordings he makes for his own label become the most valuable in his catalogue.
1965 September of My Years -- the 50th birthday album 'September of My Years' (1965), recorded for Reprise and arranged by Gordon Jenkins, is Sinatra's meditation on aging -- recorded at 49, released on his 50th birthday. It wins the Grammy for Album of the Year. The centrepiece, 'It Was a Very Good Year,' is a masterpiece of temporal perspective: Sinatra the 50-year-old looking back at himself at 17, 21 and 35, finding both nostalgia and regret. The performance is one of the most emotionally complex in popular music. He wins the Grammy for Best Male Vocal Performance.
1966 – 1967 Strangers in the Night -- unexpected Number 1 'Strangers in the Night' (1966), recorded almost as a throwaway commercial single, becomes Sinatra's first Number 1 single in 11 years. He dislikes the song -- the nonsense syllables of the ending ('dooby dooby doo') particularly irritate him -- but it introduces him to a new generation of listeners at a moment when rock music has displaced his era's pop from the charts. It wins the Grammy for Record of the Year. The following year, 'Something Stupid' -- a duet with his daughter Nancy Sinatra -- also reaches Number 1.
1969 My Way -- an anthem he came to hate Sinatra records 'My Way' in December 1968 -- Paul Anka's English adaptation of the French song 'Comme d'habitude,' written specifically for Sinatra. The song becomes his signature anthem: an assertion of self-determination and personal authenticity that resonates with audiences worldwide. Sinatra performs it at virtually every concert for the rest of his life while expressing increasing contempt for it in private. 'My Way' is the most played song at British funerals. It encapsulates both Sinatra's genuine personal philosophy and the gap between an artist's authentic intentions and his cultural legacy.
1971 – 1973 First retirement -- then the return Sinatra announces his retirement at a star-studded Los Angeles concert on 13 June 1971 -- delivering a characteristically emotional farewell and leaving the stage to a standing ovation. The retirement lasts less than two years. He returns in 1973 with the album 'Ol' Blue Eyes Is Back' and a television special, driven by restlessness and the realisation that he has nothing to do if not perform. The return is commercially successful; the musical quality of his post-retirement work is uneven but occasionally transcendent.
1973 – 1980 Mob connections and the Reagans -- political shifts Sinatra's long-documented associations with organised crime figures become a recurring public controversy through the 1970s. He has close friendships with Sam Giancana, Carlos Marcello and other mob figures and intercedes on their behalf on multiple occasions. Simultaneously, he shifts politically to the right -- supporting Ronald Reagan's gubernatorial and presidential campaigns and hosting Reagan's Inaugural Gala in 1981, mirroring his role at Kennedy's gala twenty years earlier. The political journey from liberal Democrat to conservative Republican reflects both genuine ideological evolution and personal vendettas.
1980 – 1984 Trilogy and later Capitol-era recordings Sinatra records 'Trilogy: Past Present Future' (1980) -- a three-album set surveying his career and his philosophy -- which becomes his best-selling album since the Capitol years. Arranged by Billy May, Don Costa and Gordon Jenkins, it demonstrates that his voice, though changed by age, retains its distinctive character. The album wins three Grammy nominations. Through the early 1980s Sinatra tours relentlessly, filling arenas worldwide and demonstrating a durability of audience appeal that no other entertainer of his generation matches.
1988 The Ultimate Event -- with Liza and Sammy Sinatra tours with Liza Minnelli and Sammy Davis Jr. in the 'Ultimate Event' concert tour of 1988 -- one of the highest-grossing tours of the year. At 72, Sinatra is still capable of performances of sustained emotional power, though his voice has changed dramatically and he occasionally relies on prompters for lyrics. The tour demonstrates both his enduring commercial power and the poignancy of watching a great artist's decline in public. Davis dies in 1990; Sinatra's circle of contemporaries is shrinking.
1993 – 1994 Duets -- an unexpected late masterpiece Sinatra records 'Duets' (1993) and 'Duets II' (1994) for Capitol -- technologically innovative albums in which Sinatra records his parts alone in the studio while celebrity duet partners (Bono, Barbra Streisand, Tony Bennett, Natalie Cole, Liza Minnelli, Neil Diamond) record their parts separately and the tracks are combined. The conceit is artificial but the results are often remarkable. 'Duets' sells over three million copies in the US -- his biggest seller in decades -- and introduces him to audiences under 30. Sinatra reportedly dislikes the project but acknowledges its commercial success.
1994 – 1995 Final concert -- the decline Sinatra performs his final concert at the Fukuoka Dome in Japan on 19 December 1994 -- though his actual final public performance is at a Palm Springs golf tournament in February 1995. His voice is dramatically diminished; he requires lyric prompters; his physical frailty is visible. The contrast with the man who filled Madison Square Garden in 1943 is painful. Sinatra, who has always been brutally self-aware about his vocal instrument, knows better than anyone what has been lost. He withdraws from public performance and spends his final years at home in Beverly Hills.
1998 – present Legacy -- the Chairman of the Board Frank Sinatra's legacy is the American popular song tradition at its highest development. His Capitol recordings of 1953-62 are the benchmark against which every subsequent male popular vocalist is measured. His phrasing -- the way he sits behind the beat, the way he colours a lyric with personal experience, the way he makes a song feel both intimate and universal -- has no equal. Every major male vocalist of the rock era, from Elvis Presley to Michael Buble, has had to account for Sinatra. He sold over 150 million records. He was, in his own phrase, 'the Chairman of the Board.'
1998 Frank Sinatra dies in Los Angeles Frank Sinatra dies of a heart attack at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles on 14 May 1998, aged 82. His wife Barbara is at his bedside; his children are not present. His reported last words are 'I'm losing.' He is buried at Desert Memorial Park in Cathedral City, California with a Jack Daniel's bottle, a roll of dimes (he always kept dimes for phone calls), a Zippo lighter and a pack of Camel cigarettes. Flags are lowered to half-staff in New Jersey. The Empire State Building is lit in blue. The most important popular singer in American history is gone.
