Franco Baresi Timeline

Franco Baresi 25

1960 – 2026 His legacy -- the greatest defender Baresis legacy rests on three foundations: the trophies (six Serie A titles, three European Cups, a World Cup winners medal, 719 appearances for a single club); the influence (his reinvention of the libero role under Sacchi shaped a generation of defensive thinking in European football); and the character (an orphan from Brescia, rejected as too slight, who became the permanent captain of one of the worlds great clubs for 15 years, loyal through relegation and triumph alike). Pelé listed him among footballs 100 greatest living players; his number 6 remains retired at AC Milan.
1960 – 2026 The libero -- what made him exceptional Baresis style is that of the Italian libero at its most complete: a sweeper who reads the game in advance of play, intercepts passes before they reach attackers, and organises the defence with constant communication. His nickname "Kaiser Franz" -- a reference to Franz Beckenbauer -- captures his authority and elegance. He reinvents himself at 27 under Sacchi, shifting from traditional libero to flat-back-four organiser -- a complete transformation of his positional role. Pelé names him in his list of the 100 greatest living footballers in 2004.
1960 Franco Baresi born in Travagliato Franchino Baresi is born on 8 May 1960 in Travagliato, a small town in the province of Brescia in northern Italy, the youngest of five siblings in a farming family. His mother dies when Franco is 11; his father dies three years later, leaving both Franco and his older brother Giuseppe orphaned at 14. The brothers are taken in by relatives and continue playing football, which becomes the structure around which their difficult adolescence is organised.
1974 – 1977 AC Milan youth academy Baresi enters the AC Milan youth system in 1974 and spends three years developing through the academy ranks as a libero -- the sweeper role behind the defensive line. His slight build earns him the nickname "Piscinin" (Milanese dialect for "little one") but his reading of the game, anticipation and positioning are already exceptional. Coach Nils Liedholm identifies these as rare qualities in a teenager and fast-tracks him toward the first team.
1974 Rejected by Inter Milan -- too slight On the recommendation of a family friend, the 14-year-old Franco Baresi goes for a trial at Inter Milan in 1974 alongside his brother Giuseppe. Inter retain Giuseppe but reject Franco, judging him too small and slight to make it as a centre-back. Franco applies to AC Milan instead, passes two rounds of evaluation, and joins the Milan youth academy. It is one of the most consequential talent-assessment errors in the history of Italian football.
1978 Serie A debut -- 23 April 1978, aged 17 Baresi makes his Serie A debut on 23 April 1978, aged 17, in a 2-1 Milan victory away at Verona. Coach Nils Liedholm promotes him to the starting eleven for the 1978-79 season -- an unusually rapid progression reflecting Liedholms conviction that Baresis football intelligence already surpasses that of players a decade his senior.
1979 First Scudetto -- 1978-79 Serie A title In his first full season as a regular starter, Baresi helps AC Milan win the Serie A title -- their tenth Italian championship. He is 18 years old. It is also the last major trophy Milan wins for nearly a decade, as the club enters one of the darkest periods in its history, testing Baresis loyalty to its limit.
1980 – 1982 Relegation to Serie B -- loyalty under fire In 1980 AC Milan are relegated to Serie B following the Totonero match-fixing scandal. Several top players leave; Baresi -- 20 years old and already at international level -- stays. He plays every match as Milan fight to return to Serie A, captaining the side through the two seasons in the second division. The decision to remain in the clubs darkest moment becomes the foundation of his legend.
1980 – 1997 The two Baresi brothers -- two captains, two clubs Franco and Giuseppe Baresi -- rejected by Inter and accepted by Milan respectively -- become captains of the two greatest clubs in their city simultaneously throughout the 1980s. Their image exchanging pennants before the Derby della Madonnina is the defining photograph of the fixture for a decade. They are raised as orphans together; they become the faces of the most intense club rivalry in Italian football. The fraternal symmetry of their careers is without parallel in the history of the sport.
1982 – 1994 81 caps for Italy Baresi earns 81 caps for Italy between 1982 and 1994. His record: 1982 World Cup winner (squad member, non-playing); 1988 European Championship bronze; 1990 World Cup third place as captain; 1994 World Cup finalist as captain. He retires from international football after the 1994 World Cup final, having captained his country to the ultimate match in the game.
1982 Named captain of AC Milan -- aged 22 Upon AC Milans return to Serie A, Baresi is named club captain at the age of 22 -- an extraordinary appointment for a player of his age in Italian football, where captaincy is typically a reward for veteran status. He wears the armband for 15 consecutive seasons until his retirement in 1997, organising the defence with constant communication and setting the standard for collective discipline.
1982 1982 World Cup winner -- Spain Baresi is called into the Italian squad for the 1982 FIFA World Cup in Spain. Italy win the tournament, defeating West Germany 3-1 in the final in Madrid. Baresi does not play -- Gaetano Scirea is preferred in his position -- but the experience of training alongside Scirea, the defender whose game most closely resembles his own, shapes his continued development. He is a World Cup winner at 22.
1987 – 1991 The Sacchi revolution -- the greatest defence In 1987 AC Milan appoint Arrigo Sacchi, who implements a revolutionary 4-4-2 pressing system with a flat back four playing an aggressively high defensive line. Baresi, previously a traditional libero sweeper, reinvents his game entirely to become the organiser of the new system. The back four of Baresi, Maldini, Costacurta and Tassotti becomes the most celebrated defensive unit in the history of club football, conceding the fewest goals of any team in European football during the period.
1988 – 1990 Three European Cups -- 1988, 1989, 1990 Under Sacchi, AC Milan win the European Cup in 1988 (4-0 vs Steaua Bucharest), 1989 (4-0 vs Benfica) and 1990 (1-0 vs Benfica), making them the dominant European club of the era. Baresi is the defensive anchor in each final. The three consecutive European Cup victories -- a feat achieved by only one other club (Real Madrid in 1956-58) -- cement his place among the greatest players in the history of the competition.
1989 Ballon dOr runner-up -- 1989 In 1989 Baresi finishes second in the Ballon dOr voting behind his Milan teammate Marco van Basten -- the closest a purely defensive player comes to winning the award in the 20th century. The recognition reflects the consensus of European football: that Baresi is not merely the best defender of his era but one of the best players of any position in the world.
1989 – 1997 Baresi and Maldini -- the great partnership The partnership between Baresi and Paolo Maldini in AC Milans defence -- spanning a decade from the late 1980s to Baresis retirement -- is the most celebrated defensive partnership in club football history. Baresi provides organisational intelligence from the sweeper position; Maldini provides athleticism and technical quality at left back. Together with Costacurta and Tassotti they form the back four that concedes the fewest goals of any team in European football of the era.
1990 Italia 90 -- third place on home soil At the 1990 World Cup in Italy, Baresi is the undisputed captain of the Azzurri. Italy reach the semi-finals, losing on penalties to Argentina, then defeat England 2-1 in the third-place play-off. Baresis performances throughout -- in front of the home crowd at stadiums he knows intimately, including the San Siro -- are exceptional. It is his first World Cup as a genuine starter and captain.
1991 – 1996 The Capello era -- four more Scudetti Under Fabio Capello from 1991, Milan win the Serie A title in 1992, 1993, 1994 and 1996 and go on a remarkable 58-game unbeaten run in Serie A. Baresi remains the organisational centre of the defence throughout. The 1993-94 season is perhaps the most remarkable: Milan go the entire Serie A season unbeaten. Baresi, now in his early 30s, shows no significant decline in defensive authority.
1994 Champions League 1994 -- 4-0 vs Barcelona AC Milan reach the Champions League final in 1994, facing Johan Cruyffs Barcelona in Athens. Milan win 4-0 in one of the most one-sided finals in the competitions history, with Baresis defensive organisation neutralising Romario and Stoichkov completely. It is widely regarded as the greatest single performance by a club team in European football history.
1994 USA 94 -- the torn meniscus and the final The 1994 World Cup produces the most celebrated individual act of Baresis career. In the group stage he tears the meniscus in his left knee. Italy reach the final against Brazil. Baresi undergoes surgery and 25 days later starts the final in the Rose Bowl in Pasadena in punishing heat, delivering what most observers regard as the finest individual performance of the tournament. Italy lose on penalties; Baresi, taking the first kick, blasts it over the bar. His image covering his face in anguish is one of the most iconic photographs in World Cup history.
1997 – 2026 Honorary vice-president and youth coach After retirement Baresi serves as AC Milan youth team coach (2002-2008) and subsequently as honorary vice-president. He represents the club at official functions, remains present in its daily life and serves as the living embodiment of Milans values and history. He is one of the most visible and beloved figures associated with the club in the post-playing era.
1997 Retirement -- number 6 retired, 24 June 1997 Baresi retires on 24 June 1997, aged 37, after 719 official appearances for AC Milan over 20 seasons. Milan retire his number 6 shirt -- the first player in the clubs history to receive this honour. A retirement ceremony is held at the San Siro. His final season ends with Milan winning the Serie A title -- a fitting conclusion.
2025 Surgery for pulmonary nodule -- August 2025 In August 2025 AC Milan announces that Baresi has undergone surgery to remove a pulmonary nodule discovered during routine medical checks, and that he has subsequently begun immunotherapy. The announcement triggers an outpouring of support from across Italian and world football. It is the first public confirmation of a serious health issue. His last public appearance follows in February 2026.
2026 The Olympic torch at the San Siro -- February 2026 In February 2026 Baresi makes his final public appearance at the opening ceremony of the Milano Cortina Winter Olympics, carrying the Olympic torch into the San Siro alongside former Inter Milan defender Giuseppe Bergomi -- his old rival and friend. The image of the two great rivals of the Derby della Madonnina carrying the flame together into the ground they both regard as home is one of the defining images of the Games.
2026 Franco Baresi dies aged 66 Franco Baresi dies on 31 July 2026, aged 66. His death is announced by AC Milan: "The entire history of AC Milan is in tears following the passing of Franco Baresi. His example and integrity will be forever etched into the Clubs DNA, just as his iconic number 6 shirt is." No cause of death is given. Tributes arrive from across world football: from former teammates Maldini, Costacurta and Ancelotti; from FIFA; and from clubs and players throughout Europe.
