830Al-Khwarizmi invents algebraKitab al-mukhtasar fi hisab al-jabr — the word algebra is bornAround 830 AD, Muhammad ibn Musa al-Khwarizmi, a scholar at the House of Wisdom in Baghdad, published his treatise on solving equations by balancing and completion. The Arabic title contained the word al-jabr, which became algebra in Latin. His work was the foundation of all subsequent mathematics.

Al-Khwarizmi, Thabit ibn Qurra, and other Islamic mathematicians studied and extended his methods. Without these translations, Archimedes' work might have been entirely lost to the West.
