72 – 80ColosseumRome, Italy — New WonderThe largest amphitheatre ever built, commissioned by Emperor Vespasian and completed under his son Titus in 80 AD. Capable of seating 50,000 spectators, it hosted gladiatorial contests, animal hunts and public spectacles for over four centuries. Its design influenced every major sports stadium built since. Despite earthquakes and stone-robbers, two-thirds of the original structure still stands.
