• 548 Death of Theodora Theodora dies of cancer on 28 June 548, aged approximately 48. Her death is a devastating personal blow to Justinian, who never remarries. Her political importance is demonstrated by what changes after her death: Justinian becomes more autocratic, more indecisive and more isolated. Several of the theological and political positions she had championed -- including her support for non-Chalcedonian Christianity -- are quietly reversed. Justinian survives her by 17 years, increasingly withdrawn and obsessed with theological controversy.
