• 533 – 534 Conquest of North Africa -- the Vandal Kingdom destroyed Belisarius lands in North Africa in June 533 with approximately 16,000 troops -- an audacious gamble against a Vandal kingdom that has terrorised the western Mediterranean for a century. He defeats the Vandals at the Battle of Ad Decimum (September 533) and the Battle of Tricamarum (December 533). The Vandal king Gelimer surrenders in 534. North Africa, lost in 429, is recovered in 14 months. Belisarius returns to Constantinople for a triumph, bringing the Vandal royal treasury including what may be the Temple of Jerusalem menorah (looted by the Vandals from Rome in 455). The reconquest is apparently effortless -- the Gothic Wars that follow are anything but.
