Events in the 320s 2
320 – 550Gupta Empire — India's Golden AgePeak of science, mathematics, art and literatureThe Gupta Empire presided over a golden age of Indian civilisation. Scholars made landmark advances in mathematics and astronomy — including the concept of zero and the decimal place-value system — while Sanskrit literature, sculpture and temple architecture reached classical heights.
325Council of NicaeaIn 325 AD, Constantine convenes the first ecumenical council of the Christian church at Nicaea (modern Iznik, Turkey). Some 300 bishops attend. The council condemns Arianism — the belief that Christ is subordinate to God the Father — and produces the Nicene Creed, the foundational statement of Christian orthodoxy still recited in churches today. Constantine chairs sessions personally, wearing purple and gold, presiding over a theological dispute he barely understands. Church and state are now inextricably linked.
