From the countercultural cool of M*A*S*H and Klute in the early 1970s to the menacing President Snow in The Hunger Games four decades later, he was one of cinema's most protean and compelling performers -- tall, angular, unsettling, capable of shifting from warmth to menace within a single scene. He won an Emmy and two Golden Globes but was never nominated for a competitive Academy Award, a slight rectified in 2017 when the Academy presented him with an Honorary Oscar "for a lifetime of indelible characters, rendered with unwavering truthfulness." He died on 20 June 2024, aged 88.
