2019Fall of Baghuz ends ISIS territorial caliphateUS-backed forces capture the last ISIS-held town in SyriaSyrian Democratic Forces, backed by a US-led coalition, captured Baghuz, the last town held by the Islamic State, ending the group's territorial "caliphate" that once spanned large parts of Iraq and Syria. Thousands of fighters and family members surrendered or were captured. ISIS continued to operate as an insurgent network afterward.
