On the road they emit up to forty times the legal limit of nitrogen oxides. The scandal costs VW over thirty billion euros, sends executives to prison, and destroys the political case for diesel in Europe within about three years.
2015Volkswagen Emissions Scandal Revealed'Dieselgate' exposes rigged pollution testsUS regulators revealed that Volkswagen had installed software in diesel vehicles to cheat emissions tests, understating real-world pollution levels. The scandal, dubbed 'Dieselgate', eventually implicated 11 million vehicles worldwide and cost the company tens of billions of dollars in fines and settlements. Chief executive Martin Winterkorn resigned days later.
