1940 – 2011Wangari Maathai (1940-2011)Died 25 September 2011, aged 71The Kenyan environmentalist founded the Green Belt Movement, which planted tens of millions of trees across Africa, and became the first African woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize, in 2004. She died in Nairobi of ovarian cancer. She was also a member of the Kenyan parliament and a prominent democracy activist.

2011Occupy Wall Street beginsProtest movement against economic inequalityActivists began an encampment in Zuccotti Park in New York City's financial district to protest economic inequality and the influence of money in politics, using the slogan "We are the 99%." The movement spread to hundreds of cities worldwide before the New York camp was cleared by police in November. It reshaped public debate about wealth inequality in the years that followed.
