• 2011 Syrian Civil War begins Protests in Daraa spiral into nationwide uprising Anti-government protests broke out in the southern city of Daraa after the arrest and torture of teenagers who had painted revolutionary graffiti, quickly spreading across Syria as part of the wider Arab Spring. President Bashar al-Assad's violent crackdown on demonstrators escalated the unrest into an armed insurgency and, eventually, a full civil war. The conflict would go on to kill hundreds of thousands and displace millions over the following decade.
