1830 – 2006Harriet the tortoise -- 176 yearsA Galapagos tortoise said to have been collected by DarwinHarriet, a Galapagos giant tortoise, died at Australia Zoo on 23 June 2006 at an estimated age of 175 or 176. She was long said to have been collected by Charles Darwin during the Beagle voyage in 1835, though the attribution is disputed -- Darwin never visited the island her subspecies came from. If the story holds, she outlived him by 124 years.

2006Montenegro declares independenceSplit from Serbia and MontenegroFollowing a referendum in which just over 55% voted for independence, Montenegro's parliament formally declared the country independent.
