• 2005 EU constitution rejected in referendums French and Dutch voters reject the proposed EU constitution Voters in France rejected the proposed European Union constitutional treaty in a referendum on 29 May 2005, followed by Dutch voters on 1 June 2005. The back-to-back rejections derailed the ratification process and plunged the EU into a period of institutional uncertainty. Elements of the treaty were later revived in the Lisbon Treaty of 2007.
