1924 – 2005Shirley Chisholm (1924-2005)Died 1 January 2005, aged 80Shirley Chisholm, the first Black woman elected to the US Congress and the first to run for a major party's presidential nomination, died on 1 January 2005. She represented New York in the House of Representatives from 1969 to 1983 and championed civil rights, education and anti-poverty legislation. Her 1972 presidential campaign broke barriers in American politics.
