1902 – 2003Strom Thurmond (1902-2003)Died 26 June 2003, aged 100Strom Thurmond represented South Carolina in the US Senate for 48 years and ran for president in 1948 on a segregationist platform. He held the record for the longest speaking filibuster, against the 1957 Civil Rights Act. He retired at 100, the oldest person ever to serve in the Senate.
