1907 – 2002Astrid Lindgren (1907-2002)Died 28 January 2002, aged 94The Swedish author Astrid Lindgren created Pippi Longstocking, the super-strong, unruly girl who first appeared in 1945, along with Emil, the Bullerby children and many other characters. Her books have sold well over 150 million copies and been translated into around 100 languages. She was also a forceful campaigner for children's rights and animal welfare.
