2001Space station Mir deorbitedRussia guides its station to a Pacific splashdownOn 23 March 2001 Russia brought the ageing Mir space station out of orbit, with surviving debris falling into the South Pacific near Fiji. Mir had operated since 1986 and hosted crews from many nations. Its controlled destruction ended a fifteen-year programme.
