1915 – 2000John Tukey (1915-2000)Died 26 July 2000, aged 85The American mathematician John Tukey developed the fast Fourier transform algorithm with James Cooley and pioneered exploratory data analysis, introducing the box plot and the stem-and-leaf display. He coined the word "bit" and is generally credited with coining "software". He advised the United States government on matters from polling to nuclear-test detection.
2000A court orders Napster to block copyrighted musicA recording-industry lawsuit targets music file sharingIn late July 2000 a United States federal judge granted the recording industry a preliminary injunction against Napster, the peer-to-peer service that let users trade MP3 files freely. The order was briefly stayed on appeal, but the courts ultimately upheld it and Napster shut down its network in 2001. The case shaped a decade of legal conflict over digital music.
