2000The Camp David Summit on the Israeli-Palestinian conflictClinton hosts Barak and Arafat but no deal is reachedFrom 11 to 25 July 2000 President Bill Clinton hosted Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak and Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat at Camp David in a bid for a final peace settlement. The talks collapsed over Jerusalem, refugees and borders, with each side blaming the other. The failure preceded the outbreak of the Second Intifada that autumn.
2000Crash of Air France Concorde Flight 4590A supersonic airliner catches fire on take-off near ParisOn 25 July 2000 an Air France Concorde bound for New York ran over metal debris on the runway at Charles de Gaulle Airport, bursting a tyre whose fragments ruptured a fuel tank. The aircraft caught fire and crashed into a hotel at Gonesse, killing all 109 aboard and four on the ground. It was the only fatal Concorde accident, and the type was retired in 2003.
