2000Firestone recalls millions of tyresTread failures are linked to Ford Explorer rolloversIn August 2000 Bridgestone/Firestone announced a recall of about 6.5 million tyres, many fitted to the Ford Explorer, after tread separations were tied to rollover crashes that had caused hundreds of deaths. Congressional hearings followed, and Ford and Firestone ended a supply relationship dating to 1906. The scandal produced the United States TREAD Act on vehicle-safety reporting.
