1999Australian Republic ReferendumVoters reject proposal to remove the monarchyAustralians voted in a national referendum on whether to replace the British monarch with a president, ultimately rejecting the proposal by a majority. Disagreement over the method of selecting a president contributed to the defeat. The result kept Australia a constitutional monarchy under Queen Elizabeth II.
