1999Nunavut Becomes Canada's Third TerritoryNew territory carved from the Northwest TerritoriesNunavut was formally established as a separate Canadian territory on April 1, 1999, following a land claims agreement with the Inuit. It is Canada's largest territory by area and has a majority Inuit population. The creation of Nunavut was the largest change to Canada's map since 1949.
