• 1997 Treaty of Amsterdam signed European Union agreement expands institutional powers European Union member states signed the Treaty of Amsterdam, amending the Maastricht Treaty and expanding EU authority over employment, justice, and foreign policy. It also prepared institutional groundwork for further enlargement of the union. The treaty entered into force in 1999.
