1996Taliban Capture KabulMilitia seizes the Afghan capital and imposes strict Islamic ruleTaliban forces captured Kabul, overthrowing the government of Burhanuddin Rabbani and executing former president Mohammad Najibullah. The group went on to establish an Islamic emirate governed by a strict interpretation of Sharia law across most of Afghanistan. Resistance continued in the north under the Northern Alliance.
