• 1996 Dolly the Sheep is Born First mammal cloned from an adult somatic cell Dolly was born at the Roslin Institute in Scotland, cloned from a mammary gland cell using somatic cell nuclear transfer. Her existence was kept secret until announced in February 1997, after which it became one of the most famous scientific breakthroughs of the decade. She lived until 2003 and proved that a specialized adult cell could be reprogrammed to create a whole new organism.
