• 1994 USA 94 -- the torn meniscus and the final The 1994 World Cup produces the most celebrated individual act of Baresis career. In the group stage he tears the meniscus in his left knee. Italy reach the final against Brazil. Baresi undergoes surgery and 25 days later starts the final in the Rose Bowl in Pasadena in punishing heat, delivering what most observers regard as the finest individual performance of the tournament. Italy lose on penalties; Baresi, taking the first kick, blasts it over the bar. His image covering his face in anguish is one of the most iconic photographs in World Cup history.
