• 1993 Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 discovered Astronomers spot a comet already broken apart by Jupiter's gravity Carolyn and Eugene Shoemaker and David Levy discovered a comet that had been torn into a chain of fragments by Jupiter's tidal forces during a previous close approach. The comet's unusual fragmented appearance made it immediately notable to astronomers. It later became famous when its fragments collided with Jupiter in July 1994, the first observed impact between two solar system bodies.
